Rubber Inner Fender splash shields
« on: November 09, 2008 - 01:03:19 PM »
How do the rubber splash shields go in?  From inside the engine bay or from the wheel well?

Anybody have any pics of these installed?

Thanks!

Jeff

the left one goes in the wheelwell
the right one goes in from the engine compartment , most people do this wrong

This site is AWESOME!! I was going to put a post on this very question and found this old post here with the answer. I thought something was wrong when I went to install/replace my engine bay splash shields. The passenger side one was still there but ragged and was installed in the engine bay. I took it off and installed a new one I got from Roseville Moparts. My driver's side one was long gone, but I noticed the retaining clips were installed from the wheelwell side and thought this was wrong until I read this post. So now I have a new set in the car and installed CORRECTLY!! Thanks Neil. You are just an encyclopedia of Mopar info!!! :clapping: :clapping: :clapping:

I trust the Psycho but I am a little confused here. My pass side splash shield was installed from inside the fender and covered with what looks like original undercoating just like the driver side is. They did not look like they had ever been removed. I had to cut the undercoating to remove the old shield. The inside of the fender now looks crappy because of the pattern from the old shield (no undercoating). I bought the car in 1980 so I cannot vouch for any modifications for the first ten years of its life. The original owner (little old lady) said the car was never in an accident and was all original.
I just bought a new shield and figured I better put it in the "correct" place which means moving it inside the engine compartment. The access hole that the shield covers has a large lip on the top edge,(1/4" wide bent inwards at 90 deg.) It does not make sense to me why they would put a flat piece of rubber over a lip like that. The shield will not lay down flat because of the lip.

I'd appreciate some more input on this. Thanks.

I know it seems nutty, but that's the way they are supposed to go. I am sure there is some reasoning behind it. If you look in the picture, you'll see my old crappy one on the passenger side inner fender before I replaced it. It was the original rubber shield and had never been replaced.

The passengers side was installed from the engine side because you could possible cut yourself on the clips if you were working on the car.  The drivers side has a lot of other things in the way(steering shaft, colomb, brake booster, master cylinder) so chances of cutting yourself on that side are less.  Accually your chances of cutting yourself on that side are probably more...so they just said "the heck with it, they are going to cut themselves anyway."
