To glue or not to glue carpet
« on: August 07, 2009 - 10:29:55 AM »
OK, so I just got the carpeting laid out in the Cuda, cut everything out and it's looking good.

Now the instructions say to glue it down, but it is laying so nice I don't think it needs to be glued, and the carpet in my Chally ( replaced by previous owner ) is not glued down.

So, is this a matter of personal opinion?
Is there a reason on why or why not to glue?

Thanks for the input.

I've never seen carpet in a car glued down... if you have a bump steam it to stretch or shrink

Jeff what brand did you get? I ask as I'm close to putting in the carpet I bought at Carlisle from Herb's. The carpet ( if you call it that, looks like the stuff they use on large box speakers -yuck) I have now is glued down, what a mess to clean up! I had to pull some of it up when I welded in the torque boxes.

I had a buddy that used to work in an interior shop.  He helped me and said that contact cement was the way to go.  That is the last time I listed to him.  I do not think that the carpet is ever going to come up and not sure how I am going to clean all that glue off when or if I ever need to.  If it lays nice, the seats and sills will help hold it down.

Dude the carpet was never glued down in these cars. It would be hell to pull out. Once its down, it doesnt really move around.

Cool, thanks guys!

Jeff what brand did you get?
Brad

I bought the carpeting from E-bay, the seller is partsnacc, and it was about $130 US and only about 20 to ship.
It looks good to me, a nice thick carpeting that has extra insulate at the bottom in the foot areas.
It is molded, for the trans tunnel and the "sumps" of the rear foot areas.
It also has lots of overlap, was able to push the carpet way up the firewall, even to the point of triming around the pedals, and over the sides.
I started 1st by cutting out for the shifter and counsel mounting brackets, laying it in place, and figured I would give it a day or 2 to settle, and it layed out very nice. I then trimmed the sides to tuck under the kick panels and such.

It does hold position nicely, and I don't even have the seats or seat belts bolted in yet.

Thanks guys!

Yowzers....never glue your carpet down.

Unless you're covering the ceiling.
