Grrrrr to the perp
« on: August 16, 2009 - 06:05:17 PM »
So how about this crap? I was at a local car show recently and stopped to get gas on my way home. I unlock my cap and take it out. I went through the preliminaries with my debit card, it tells me to select grade and begin fueling. I take the pump handle out, turn it around, and as I'm lowering it to my car, the pump kicks on and its immediately spewing gasoline!!!! Hit my bumper and lower valance before I was able to point it to the ground. My mind whirled for a second not knowing what was going on. I wasn't pulling the grip. I pointed it away from the car and after a gallon or more lost realized that someone had put it back in the cradle with the lock on.    :swear: :stomp: Wiped down the bumper and valance, no harm done, but man that freaked me out.

I didnt think they were supposed to do that. Aren't they supposed to automatically click off the lock when either the gasoline reaches the spout or when you are done pumping? Man that sucks for sure. I bet your mind was realing when that happened.   :swear:

I am glad you were ok. Shame how people act these days.  I wish there was a way to award wake up calls to all that deserve it.

Yep, I've run into that same thing, with the lock being set, several times this year already.  :swear:  Luckily, so far I've noticed it each time before I've selected the grade.  What the heck is wrong with people anyhow?

I tell you what, I'm gonna check every single time now before I use the pump. Like the other poster said, I had always thought they couldn't be locked in the cradle. I know better now.

:angelwings: good to hear it didn't turn out any worse cause it sure could have. I've never ran into that nor heard of it happening either. I know with the gas prices (especially last year) being higher a lot of stations are requiring pre payment, then after you select grade the pump is turned on from inside. Consequently the customer before you knew what he had paid would not fill his tank so he just locked it in place and when the amount reached his pre payment amount the pump would automatically then shut off. Probably not intentionally, but he then just put the nozzele back in the cradle. For sure will need to double check from now on even though I'm in the habit of putting the nozzle in the tank before selecting gas grade.. Hope you have clear coat finish, or got it washed down in short time.  :2thumbs:

I dunno, my first inclination is that it was one of the dumb college kids (Shepherd University is right there) probably did it intentionally, just being stupid. Yeah, I cleaned it off good and it is clear coated. I just went downstairs to look at the area again and its fine. I'm just glad I didn't have it pointing in the air over my car. Would have been a gyser of gas all over my vinyl top and everything. Then I WOULD have been screaming bloody murder.   :villagers:

That happens when older pumps (handles) don't trip. Call the authorities either weights and measures, or EPA. That's a Really  major flaw in the design. :22yikes:
