Fuel Pump nut won't budge ...... 440
« on: August 26, 2009 - 10:26:42 PM »
I am in the process of putting my engine components back in following a rebuild.   I was trying to back off the allen key nut under the fuel pump to install a rebuilt pump, but it won't budge.    I don't want to strip the head and have to drill it out.  I have been using a socket attachment without success, but it feels like it is starting to round out the inside of the nut.   I tried some penetrating oil.     :swear:

Heat??  Suggestions?

Thanks .....

did you dig the grease and grime out from the bottom of the hex to get the allen head all the way in? I make sure by tapping it in as deep as it will go. It's a 5/16ths allen head that goes in there

I was trying to back off the allen key nut under the fuel pump to install a rebuilt pump,

I don't get why you want to pull out that plug to install a fuel pump. It is only removed to pull out the pump pushrod.

Do you know that you have to push the pushrod up with your finger before you install the pump.

heat & wax

:iagree: Some wise person here told me about this method when I was trying to remove an exhaust stud....WORKED GREAT!    :wow:  Just heat up the bolt and then hold a small birthday candle to the area where the bolt goes into the threads...the wax creeps in I guess and works wonders!

I had also used PB blaster, so not sure how much that helped, but it wasnt BUDGING before the hot wax treatment.

Well guys .... ShelbyDogg was correct!!   I was mislead by someone locally that told me that the nut needed to be removed.   Turns out the rod/shaft just needed to be pushed back into the block to allow the arm on the pump to engage with the rod.   I now understand that the allan nut is only to replace the rod ..... which rarely needs to be replaced.   All is good .... you never stop learning.    Thanks for all the responses / ideas / etc .....

The ideas with the heat and wax sound intersting for future reference.   On to re-wiring now .......

Probably a Chevy Guy..........

Did you ever ask somebody a question about their car, where you already know the answer, just to see how much they really don't know?

Agree .... thanks again for your insight.  Now tackling wiring.   This ought to be interesting.   It was completely stripped out and new replacing most.
