gauge interchangeablility
« on: September 02, 2009 - 11:57:51 PM »
Can someone tell me how hard it is to take my rallye gauges out and put in a set of these temporarily while the rallyes are getting refurbed? I have the wiring harness for them as well. will the harness just plug in and will I have to change mounting brackets or anything?

Thanks

MOst of it is plug & play , the lengths may be a bit different altough fo rthe most part I Think they have to be lenghtened for the ralley guages so most should reach fine & it simply bolts in place of the ralley panel

I have heard that changing from a standard gauge cluster to a Rallye cluster is a big undertaking.  I would imagine that going the other way is just as big a deal.

I don't have any experience in this...I'm just going by word of mouth.  I don't think it is an easy swap.  How long is it going to take to get your Rallye gauges redone?

Changing from standard to Rally gauges causes you to have to run a constant power wire to the clock, a switched power wire to the tach, and also a feed to the tach from the "-" side of the ignition coil. Also, the Rally gauges have a different light bar with one more bulb.

...Switching from Rally to standard.... WARNING, that idiot light for the oil pressure won't work. The standard and Rally gauges use different oil pressure sending units.

Hm, ok. I was kind of hoping it was more plug and play. Im not even sure it was done right when it WAS swapped, the gauges just sit there and dont light up or move or do anything, so I just assumed they needed reconditioned. But perhaps they were installed wrong?

Yes, it could have been a wiring or installation issue...although I will tell you the Rally gauge clocks and tachs usually need rebuilt. The other cluster could have been dead too if the voltage limiter on the back crapped out , as the gas/oil/temp gauges are powered by it.  This is the problem most of us face buying cars from owners that may not have been so bright...But don't feel bad. Honestly, when you get those gauges back at least you will have piece of mind that they work and are calibrated. Then if something doesn't work, we knows it's the wiring.

yeah this guy did some really ridiculous stuff to it, Im sure Ive only seen the half of it too lol...

does anyone have any recommendations for well reputed places to send them out to? I found one link here but I emailed over 2 weeks ago and no response. Id hate to send them out and never get them back, they seem to cost a bit even in not working condition

Thanks for the good advice guys

When I get to that point, I will be sending my gauges to Mike Mancini.
