My 340 and 440 both ran hot. The engines were rebuilt by chevy mechanics. I noticed on both engines that to get the correct timing the distrubuter had to be moved way far around. The advance light and marks on the balancer did not jive. This indicates incorrect cam timing? Right?   :clueless:

no , if the cam was off by more than a few degrees the car would be difficult to start / run poorly with bad milage & power
the outer ring on the damper could have slipped or the timing cover indicator could be wrong for the damper you have or it could just be that the timing the engine needs doesn`t  make sense with a light which is why I tossed mine out years ago & tune by ear .

Maybe the distributor is a tooth out, surely the mechanics checked the harmonic balancer timing marks against TDC, but then they may not take care with their assembly work.   :stirpot:
