Diff Question
« on: June 06, 2010 - 01:24:14 AM »
This is not about the C or C but my 97 Ram 1500 4x4. One afternoon I noticed a very light, low almost inaudible grumble coming from the rear diff. Upon checking the oil, it appeared ok with some light crap in it. When I replaced it with some 90 weight the thing just exploded with noise! Now it has a constant low rumble, serious resonating whine at 39 mph and what sounds like I am dragging a rattling chain upon decelleration.

I know I am gonna need a rebuild here but jeez, what the heck caused it to suddenly explode with racket?!?!?!

This thing has got me worried about changing the diff oil in the C or C and was wondering what the experts think.
Thank guys, I appreciate it :2thumbs:

No way changing the lube caused this problem.    The chain dragging description is the sound you get with broken ring/pinion teeth.

That's what I thought, upon removing the cover and inspecting the ring and pinion, they appear to be perfect with no visable wear/ breakage.  :clueless:

U's are original and appear to be ok with no obvious signs of trouble or movement, I would think that with the amount of noise and the amount of miles since it started (at least 2,000) it would have given up by now or at least gotten worse but it is the same as the first day when I changed the fluid
