Take a look at these pics and tell me what you think
« on: September 12, 2009 - 07:20:02 PM »
If you dont mind, please take a look at this 70 Barracuda and tell me what you think of it. Paint and body look done, interior could use some help. It is a 5 hour drive from me so I have not seen it in person. Can A/C that works well and looks good be put in it?

It looks nice, but to be honest the engine bay and engine look a bit dirty for having just been restored.  I would also ask what the deal is with the warranty on the 440, because that is a bit of a rarity.  What's the price?

He is asking $26500. I assume it is a Barracuda, not a 'Cuda. More than likely not the original engine either. How much does that affect the price?

I think the pics are not good enough to really tell.  I see several imperfections, but you should go check it out.
I dont think you can expect a perfect restored 70 440 for 26k  :dunno:

Paul,

Original drivetrain cars can be more valueable----- depending on condition and desireability.  If this is a "Barracuda" that someone restored and placed a 440 in it, I would say it was likely a good choice in cloning it.  As for value, of course it will never be worth as much as the real deal, but then again, there is a place in this world for clones because they are affordable and thus---- we get to drive them!  I don't know the value of the car, but I'm thinking you couldn't build it for that much, so if you have checked it out and it runs strong, is rust free and needs little tlc, he's likely in the correct price range.  Shop around for comparables and if nothing else is measuring up, then make him an offer at maybe 10 to 25% off his asking price and see where it goes.  Know your limits and stick to them.

Exhaust is not complete and the instrument gauges don't look stock to me.  For that money at least the exhaust could be correct.  I'd be sure to put your hands on it and look more closely.

I am pretty sure that it is a clone, but that being said I can assure you that you cannot build a car like that for twenty five grand.  <-- look over there and ask me how I know.  ;D  I can see a bunch of detail items that could be done to clean up the underhood area, but they aren't usually expensive if you do them yourself.  The pictures could be better so we could see more details, but unless there are hidden issues, I think it is in the ballpark.  With the crappy market you may be able to move the price a bit. :2cents:

It's missing a lot of little pieces (tail panel chrome, exhaust etc.) and it's got a Challenger dash.  Check it out...see what you think.

BTW, what's holding the fog lamps to the car?

No good pics of the underside,I`d beware of a skim and shine type paint job.Car does look decent in the pics but I`d want to check it out in person.

(Can A/C that works well and looks good be put in it? )

Aftermarket under dash a/c unit could be added on. It would take a couple of grand to do that job. I would be courious about the cam that is installed in the engine for running the a/c unit tho.  You may need a more streetable cam for the a/c to function propper in traffic at low idle.  The exhaust kinda makes me think that.

I see a tach mounted on the dash pad top and some switches mounted just below the heater switches, so I wonder about the wiring.  As far as the body work goes, it sounds like he started with a very solid body.

It has an aluminum radiator installed so maybe cooling the engine with a/c won't be a big issue. You would need to know about the drive train. 4 speed in good shape?  What bell housing?  Factory or lakewood SFI stuff. What clutch? New fly wheel?  What gears for cruisin with ac?

Do you do your own mechanic work?   If not, you can expect to spend close to 5 or 7k more to get it to where you want it.

So wiring, ac install, exhaust and engine work is a minumum. Then cosmetic issues comes with any car you buy

From the pics i find a positive point the chassis is painted and detailed ,this would suguest that a serious effort was put fourth .what i get from that is bad body works unlikely and the rest looks finished but a closer look would define the quality of said work .but for the price i would think your in the ball park .

The non-standard gauge panel was the first thing I noticed, but man, from what I've seen, seems like it's in the fair to good deal price range.....
