1971 challanger Flashers/turnsignal problems
« on: September 13, 2009 - 06:40:47 AM »
:banghead: :pullinghair: Still stumped on wire heating problems, guys ill tell you the truth, im stumped ! when i use the flashers/turnsignals the emergency flasher fuse heats up almost to hot to touch , especially the back where wire connects to back of fuse box. (whats weird is it seem like when i squeeze spot it gets hotter) when back kick panell connector to rear lights is disconnected fuse doesnt overheat , i cannot find a short or problem with rear bulbs ,wiring, have regrounded everything, ran new wires to brown, green wires to trunk, connected new wiresgreen brown from kick junction to old on drivers side in trunk before they start a series, regrounded rear light housings to frame and ran ground to side light housings, completly disconnected ALL wires to rear except brown and green , still over heats fuse , im not talking warm , but gets too hot, fuse never blows ?  replaced bulbs, checked for shorts, i know flashers and fuses can get warm, but i dont want to put everything back together with this over heating problem , ive got every thing disconnected possible , light switch, dimmerswitch, brake switch all front bulk head connecters (using one jump hot to bulkheat for testing when testing only back end ) also ignition switch disconnected and all dash. can the diode be a problem.i dont think i have one. when i take out back four flasher sockets rear plate light and rear side markers flash. ive determined this is normal as power from ungrounded flasher sockets are just finding ground thru other elements (black wire to other bulbs) bulbs test .4-.6 and 2.2 to 2.5 ohms res. the shorter element is the one that flashes (i think the one with the least resistance ? ) Could my problems still be in dash and it just appears to be in back when i plug in at kick panel. iv got a new turn signal switch in, cant find any problems with it. somebody i read earlyer tonight had to sand a fuse holder to get lights to work, im going to try that ? something is drawing to much amps ,surely a short  ? , any ideas appreciated !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ps. when i felt the back of fuse getting real hot while holding it in my right hand , i took my volt meter lead and pinched a red lead in my left hand and with aligator clipped the black lead to car frame and it registered 9.6 volts, has any one ever heard of this ? also over heats wether car running or not !

"when back kick panell connector to rear lights is disconnected fuse doesnt overheat"

That statement means there is a wire with it's insulation rubbed off somewhere on it way to the tail lights. You may not have found it yet, but it's there. Take apart what you have to, sill plate, rear interior panel, etc.. to inspect the whole harness. You will find a problem with the rear body harness. Just might take a while.

I had this experience on a 240Z, when I got the car it was apparent that one of the headlamp fuse-terminals had been hot.  It would melt the solder in the fuse but not blow the fuse.  Eventually I rewired that fuse with a separate fuse holder & had no more problems.
You could try replacing the wire that gets hot, I would make a temporary connection to another source bypassing that wire, & see if it also gets hot.  If NOT then that wire, or it's connection, is the problem, if SO the problem lies elsewhere.
