Blocking my hood
« on: September 22, 2009 - 03:28:06 PM »
Is it just me or is the E-body hood just a pain to sand?  The whole thing is curved all over in all directions.  There are a few spots that I am not sure about how to do and what its supposed to be like.

1 is the center front of the hood there is the center line. How far does it actually go up the hood? (71 Challenger BTW) My hood may have filler hiding some of it. A close up center pic would be cool :2thumbs:

How do you sand for the sides of the hood from the edge to the rise of the raised scoop section (RT hood)? It kinda has a valley to it. So using a small block would still only cut the peaks.

Thaks in advance.  If needed I'll post pic if you dont understand what I'm talking about

I'm no autobody pro but I know the pros make/buy all sorts of blocking tools for the contours.  I guess you would have to have rounded and flexible backing pads.  I'm guessing some of those areas are pretty stiff and don't tend to get damaged so I doubt that the blocking is critical there. I've been using this site to help me lately.

If you are referring to the rallye hood...no center line   even the flat hood does not carry the center line to the front of the car.. one exception is the T/A hood.

Browse these posts & you will see, with one exception nochevys, no center line visible.

The pics from the angle I was hoping were all Cuda's lol. This is the best one I can see. It looks that it goes about 6-8" up. About where the R/T would be on some cars.

Rally hoods not hard to sand at all.    You just have to have the right tools, and some simple tools will work find.   Your blocking tool must have some flex to it.  I am fond of the simple cheap paint paddle with sand paper wrapped around it.  Its flexible enough to adapt to the slope of the hood.   I also like the block pad of various sizes.  When you sand dont press hard with your palms.   If you can find a a 3 by 4 flexible pad this is also handy.   Dont underestimate the power of the paint paddle.

Guess I need to rethink this... I'm seeing a bit of a centerline showing when the light hits just right

It's there but how far up is the question. I have a feeling that there is filler covering part of mine but don't totally want to find out it's not if you know what I mean?

Thanks for the tips. I have the 7 peice Durablock kit and it seems to flex decent. But I don't have just a small pad. I'll have to get one. Thanks.
