    I need help in figuring this out.  My car has primer on it my guess would be epoxy but I am not sure.  After block sanding I broke into some bare metal,looks like a spray on filler and regular filler.  When I went to the paint store I told them what I have and they sold me epoxy primer and a high build 2k primer both are ppg omni.  So I assumed that after all the blocking was done 100% I would use the epoxy then the high build then base/clear. With more sanding inbetween.

     So the confusion is that I went back to the store today to get a few more things and was told to only use the epoxy on bare metal.  So do I only spot shoot the bare metal spots or cover the whole car? And does the base/clear actually go on the high build? Is ther any product I'm missing here?

    you should lay down a sealer after the high build, while the epoxy is great for bare metal i dont think it will hurt spraying over the existing. the high build 2k primer is meant to help with blocking out the waves.

    The epoxy on bare metal is correct. Here is the order you should follow to get this done:
    After epoxy on bare metal, put 2 coats of 2K primer over entire car. No sanding between coats needed.
    After 2K primer dries, resand and shoot with sealer first. No sanding sealer.  Shoot base coat and then clear coat. After this dries, sand it and buff it to obtain the finish you are looking for.   :2thumbs:

    Thanks for the help.  It actually means less work than I was gonna do. Which is a big + :cheers: and I'm back in the garage  :working:

    For a nice high build primer and it is inexspensive use slick sand.After you get all your blocking done then spray a coat of 2k or sealer over the slick sand then wet sand with 800 grit paper and it when you spray base coat it will be like glass.

    This is what my husband does on his projects.

    Oh and yes expoxy or self etching primers are only for bare metal says my husband.hope this helps.

    Googled this....interesting read

    With 2K there are a few options, epoxy and urethane being the most popular. I don’t feel that there is a huge difference in the two as far as how they apply or work. Epoxy is more forgiving with sensitive substrates. It really comes down to what you feel more comfortable with. The epoxy has no isos so that would be one reason to choose it.

    Seems that to use as a sealer coat from epoxy primer dilute with solvent.

    We often suggest people add solvent to the Low V epoxy to make their own 'pentrating epoxy' or sealer/primer. It is cheaper than buying the other products, especially if a lot of 'primer' is needed.

    When using DTM Epoxy Primer sealer as a primer mix 1 part primer to one part catalyst (1:1). When using as a primer sealer mix one part primer, one part catalyst to 1/2 urethane reducer. (1:1:1/2)
