"But then the other day I saw a car with 'Barracuda' written on the back and 'Cuda' on the side."

By "on the side" do you mean on the side of the hood where the engine size is also called out i.e "'cuda 340"?

Then this was probably an add-on by the owner.

"The 340 was ONLY available in the 'Cuda, not the Barracuda or Gran Coupe. That answers my query!"

I don't know of any 340 Barracuda's BH in 70 or 71.  But 72 & 73 the 340 WAS available on the Barracuda BH.
The 72 & 73 Barracuda's BH that came with a 340, used the "340 Four Barrel" emblem on the performance hood, and not "'cuda 340"

For Gran Coupes BP that came with the N code 383, and had the performance hood, they had the emblem "'cuda 383" on the hood; now these had the script "Barracuda" on the tail panel.  These also had upgraded suspension i.e. front sway bar, just like the 'cuda BS, in essence the same as the standard 'cuda 383 BS but with the luxury appointments of the Gran Coupe BP.  This being the only time you could have the best of both worlds. I don't believe any 340, 426, or 440 Gran Coupe were ever produced in either 70 or 71.

For standard Barracuda's BH that came with the N-code, and didn't have the performance hood, then i believe the "383 Four Barrel" emblem was used on the fender, under the script 'Barracuda', these also had the upgraded suspension.  i guess one could call that a 'performance option' on the base model.

...or do you mean on the side of the fender, where, for standard BH, and Gran Coupe BS, the script of 'Barracuda' is located?

'cuda BS had nothing from the factory on the side of the fenders in the years 70-74.  Only on the performance hood with the engine size call-out emblems.  So in this case, hood and tail panel should match, both saying 'cuda.

its funny how e-mails and bulliten boards don't always communicate exactly what we are thinking!  i hope i haven't made it more confusing!  i also add the disclaimer that i am no expert!  so if i am wrong on anything i post its only cause i am a 'newbie'  :1zhelp:

You could get the '71 Cuda with a 340 Magnum, right? I've seen so many 71 Cudas with 340s in?

Also, "Magnum" was only for Dodge, Plymouth emblems would state "Cuda-340" or "340-Four Barrel"..    (Magnum - Dodge) (Commando (or Super Commando) - Plymouth)...
