Sanding
« on: September 26, 2009 - 09:47:36 PM »
Hello Everyone! I have a question regarding sanding my car. I have used aircraft stripper to take my car down to bare metal. I am now using a BA sander with 220 grit to smooth it out and take the excess paint off. There are rust spots that will not come out with the 220 Grit. What can I use to get these out. I have enclosed pictures of the spots. Please help. :working:

I would personally use 80 grit for bare metal on your DA to give the primer something to bite to.  If it does not remove the rust, your should either grind it out, or sand blast it.

Thanks ksierens,
I was told that 80 grit was to aggressive for the bare metal. This was suggested to me before but my automotive paint store told me this. i'm starting to believe that they are wrong. Thanks for the info. :working:

I would suggest useing a small sandblaster for blasting spots.  the rust is creating low spots and you will only get rid of them if you sand down the high spots...  :2cents:

If you're on a budget and don't have a sand blaster, we've had good luck with wire wheeling the rust spots.  You can usually get the wheels at an auto parts place for around a dollar. You can reverse the drill direction occasionally to make the wheels more aggressive.  When you got all the rust specks out, coat it with some spray can rust killer.  When you're ready to fill and prime the spots, sand the area a little.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm stripping the paint because I want to know for myself what is underneath. My car looked like it was all original. After stripping the lower Quarters, I found that they were loaded with filler. So...i will need lower Quarter skins. I'm not doing the body work or paint myself. Just stripping and Priming. Do you think that it will be ok to use 80 grit and just use a cheap primer for now until it goes to the body shop? My body guy is going to sand it down again once he gets it. I have heard that a lot of body shops don't take the cars down to the bare metal so i am doing this to make sure that they do and know what is underneath. Thanks again.
