trunk rust removal
« on: September 29, 2009 - 01:57:57 PM »
Hi all,
I just bought a '73 cuda... I've never done any kind of body work, but want to give it a shot.

The trunk has a fair amount of surface rust, not all the way through, so I believe the pan is good.

What's the best way to remove this and then how should I finish it once it's removed ?

Thanks,
Victor

blast & epoxy would be the way to go.  If the surface has pitting the only way to really clean it is blasting.

There are some rust remover products on the market.  I've been using EvapoRust on small parts and it works great.  For the trunk you are going to want a "gell" instead of a liquid.  Hot Rod magazine did an article on rust removers this year.  They tested all of the major rust removers on the market and evaluated each one.  I remember there was a "gell" that worked really good.  I would think that would be a nice option over trying to clean out all the media that blasting would require. :2cents:

well,  I`m pretty oldschool when it comes to removing rust, but I guess there must be some truth in a hotrod mag. article...

Great, Thanks for all the input... I figure I'll end up doing a bit of both

I found the Hot Rod magazine article, I'll check it out

Thanks again

Curious what they recommended.  I've always been a fan of Naval Jelly although I did use a rust neutralizer that actually seemed to work...
