swapping 340 to 440
« on: October 23, 2009 - 02:09:30 PM »
i recently purchased a 440 and 727 out of a 66 imperial with 80000 original miles on it. it ran and i got to drive it before the engine was pulled. im looking to swap this in place of the 340 that is currently in my barracuda. some history on the car: originally  had a slant 6 and tf904. had the 340 swapped in some 20 years ago along with a 727. havent driven it in over 20 years and am looking to get it running again. what all is involved in the swap? i got the engine with all accessories, tranny with linkage, radiator, driveshafts (for the ends) and the complete rearend. are the motor mounts and k member the same as the small block ones?  thanks for your  help.

Looks like you have most of the basics covered. The K member is the same, assuming of course that when the slant 6 was replaced with the 340 a V8 k member was installed. The mounts are different. Does the 440 have the metal mount bracket on the block? If so just go down to your local auto parts store and pick up a pair of replacement rubber mounts and you are good to go.

yes the k member was replaced when going from a 6 to 8. the mounts are alot different than the small block mounts. they only have one bolt. its very strange maybe ill be able to re use the bracket part of the mount and just get the rubber part specified for the BB.

Nope, the metal part is different from small block to big block. A lot different. You can usually find them on ebay or craigslist for less than $50.

Use the trans mount n cross member off the 340 trans mission. If 727, the driveshaft will work and you will be able to use the auto tranny lines. Not sure if a 66 model 727 has the tail housing for console shift cars, but you can swap them. Radiator lower hose on tank is on oposite side, a rad shop can change that over. 66 c body mounts may be different from the b&e body mounts
