NYC 2009 October
« on: October 18, 2009 - 02:25:40 PM »
I flew up to NYC with a couple of old buddies from Alabama last week, staying on the 22nd floor of the Eastgate Tower Suite Hotel on 39th street between 2nd and Lexington avenues. Good clear weather until cold, rainy friday when we departed the city of loud horns, sirens, and racing cabbies :burnout: ::)

Here are some pics i took; west towards the Empire State Building - the crane in the process of erecting the newer skyscraper looked to be at least 80 stories up :o - if you're not afraid of heights and are certified as a crane operator, i'm thinking the pay would be very good :thinkerg: and south towards one of Trump's (black) Towers located a few blocks up from the U.N. on 1st avenue.

There may not be a time limit for bicycle parking but if you leave it unattended for too long.........things may happen :smilielol:

Theses two ladies were handing out adverts for the musical "Chicago".

You never know what you'll find underground at the various subway stops. This lady was playing the saw accompanied by an instrumental recording of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" underneath 42nd street/6th avenue :violin: No, really - it actually sounded pretty good :clapping:

Although we did eat at Katz' Deli (hey, if it's good enough for Soupy Sales why not?) my preference is Ben's Deli on 38th street between 7th and 8th avenues. A salami on rye, fries, pickles and cream soda; pardon me while i wipe the drool off my keyboard    We also ate at Sam's (Italian), Pote' (Spanish), and Phoenix Garden (Oriental); all within two blocks of the hotel. Bring a healthy appetite and a money belt :grinyes: :money: :crying:

The big entertainment event attended was at the Beacon Theatre; "Ian Anderson Plays the Acoustic Jethro Tull" accompanied at different points by a guest flautist, as well as a violin fellow from Carnegie Hall. Lots of old hippies in the audience, including yours truly. The show included early songs such as 'A Song for Jeffrey', Dharma For One', 'Bouree', and 'Fat Man' up through 'Skating Away...', and the encore was 'Aqualung' :smokin: :drunk:

Since we're an automotive forum i better post something mechanical, right? Well, other than a couple of newer Bentleys :smokin: :smokin:, there wasn't much. Parked inside a fenced lot was someone's 'Transformers'-themed ride :P Next is this British classic - i'm guessing here :dunno: :clueless: - spotted on 6th avenue in Greenwich Village, and lastly on 14th street just up from Union Square this fellow was in the process of parking his bike. He said it's a 1955 model, pretty cool :smokin: I noticed a new trend during this visit - lots of Vespa scooters!

My wife and I first went to NYC in spring of 2006 and fell in love with the city. We just went back about 6 months ago. Truely out of this world place, especially for someone from the south!!! I could write a book about all the things we saw. We also saw and met several "famous people" that were out and about including Will Ferrell, Jeff Bridges, Spike Lee and my favorite was Bridgett from the Playboy show The Girls Next Door. We also saw a few Broadway shows as well. Needless to say we'll be back!!! :2thumbs: :2thumbs:

 Thanks for the Apple tour Russ. When we lived in eastern PA about 25 years ago we went up there a couple times  :pullinghair:  NEVER AGAIN, pictures and videos like you posted will be the only way I will ever again see the sights. Just plain crazy. First time we went was to see the Statue of Liberty, second time our daughter was part of a chorale group (school) that sang at Cargney (sp?) Hall. And money, a weekend's worth will make a decent downpayment on a car  :roflsmiley:  But you can see most anything there for sure.  :2thumbs:

Glad you had a fun trip. Me being from a small hick town in S. Dak I think I'll pass. Just to much noise and crazies around there for me. I'm with whitesatinmopar  on this one.

I didn't know there was stuff like that to do in the city and I live about 20 minutes away and can see the skyline from where I work in the winter.
