In a 340, where does this go???
« on: October 18, 2009 - 11:02:03 AM »
I am putting together a 340 for a friend for his '72 Challenger. He brought it to me in pieces ready to go together.  I found this bolt in the bag of bolts and I have no idea where it goes.  :clueless:

It is a 5/16 bolt about 3/4" long. The hole goes all the way through it.

Thanks!

Jeff

Small block upper cam thrust plate, put it in the upper left hole.
That lets oil to get to the timing chain..

Okay,  I have three other bolts the same size that I have in the thrust plate right now along with an oil shield that the bottom left bolt goes through and a tang from the shield sticks into the bottom right hole in the thrust plate.  This is how the service manual showed that it should go.  Do I leave the shield in place and replace the top left bolt?

Thanks!

Jeff

Ok, once I saw this thread I got a little freaked out and still am. I am in the middle of a 1970 340 that had never been apart before I got my hands on it and there is no hole in any of the four bolts for the cam thrust plate, so what gives?  :dunno:

It works without the special bolt also. Maybe not 300000miles but it works. Remember to use the shield, it really helps.

So should I drill one of the bolts (I have a bridgeport mill so making sure the hole is centered is not a big deal)? If so what diamter is the hole? Should I leave the bolt out? What does this shield look like and where can I get one?

Just leave the pass side upper bolt out. Mopar did this on later assemblies.
