383 Dyno Result at the Rear Wheels
« on: December 16, 2012 - 03:07:40 PM »
I thought I would share my Dyno result with the forum with some feedback. I must admit I was expecting better results.
1970 383, Edelbrock 650 4 Barrel, 1 3/4" Headers, 3" Flowmaster
My friend with 70 Charger 440 Six pack, same Dyno, but Auto got worse results at the rear wheels.
Cheers

Nice flat torque curve   :bananasmi :bananasmi :bananasmi
Did you do any tweaking to the engine whilst at the dyno?
....... ignition advance can make quite a difference....as I'm sure you know...
If you are too disappointed, guess you can allways try Nitrous ....   :burnout:
Please, can you add some notes on the tread we made on gasmilage?

That looks about right. Figuring the gross power back in the day was 335 ( at the flywheel with no accessories), you are only around 60 horses short of the gross in an "as installed" and through the transmission, which is a very accurate measure of a net power number.

Considering the motor sounds mostly stock, thats a healthy number.

there decent #s, but if your running  3" exhaust, thats killing you!! especially tourque , my 383 is modified and made over 385 at the wheels, i was runnin 3" exhaust and went back too 2 1/2" tti with dynomax muff, and gained over 20 ft. lb. tq at lower rpms, and no loss at the top. and much quieter!! :woo:

Looks way better than what I will ever have with a stock '72 340.

With 240hp at the crank, I probably got like 180hp at the wheels if even that...  :walkaway:

Yeah, 3 inches is a little big for a stock 383, but if you get a slightly hotter camshaft, and some porting done it would be perfect. I'd say it's the perfect reason to crank up the juice.

Those TQ numbers are great.   HP not bad either.

Remember, those old factory qouted "HP numbers" were a numbers game:  They were taken off an engine that was tuned, no air filter, no assesscories, headers and sometimes no exhaust, and taken of the crank/flywheel

If you got another intake (Im assuming yours is stock) and a good set of heads, youll go about 330 horse, but it could effect your TQ curve some

A mild cam would wake it up some too

I agree with tweaking the carb and timing   A good dyno shop will do that for you.  Carb alone, with minor tunig, I have sen go up 5-8 HP easy  Same with timing

What dyno was used ? The Mustang dynos are heartbreakers you get about 15% higher #s with a dynojet .
I bet the car performs well as is though , I would swap to a Proform 750 for a bit better power
