73 to 70 tailight conversion

Now i know that on a challenger the the quarters are different, but do you think it would be possible to change the rear panel on a '73 to a 70-71 style? are the quarters at the back that much different or is it different else where.. i need help on this one.

The '70 and '73 quarters are the same except for the sidemarker openings.  I think the only thing you will need for the conversion is the '70 tailight panel which you can purchase from Goodmark for $400.

so your saying that it will fit.. thank you.. now have u or do u know someone who has done this personally or are you just going on the fact that u know that the quarters are the same?

rear dimensions are the same 70 to 74, the tail panel will go in without any issues, the lock support is the same as well. once you replace the tail panel, you will have to modify or replace the rear harness, plus all of the lamps/bezels.

It's do-able with cutting out the 73 tail panel and welding in the 70.

As mopardave noted, the wiring harness on the 70 is different. Also, after buying the 70 tail lens's and bezels, you are in deep as far as money goes.   :money:

nah it wont be that deep considering im re doin the 73 challenger from the ground up.. new quarters new trunk floor the whole 9 yards.. so i may as well go as far to make it look like a 70-71. its just a plain jain 318 challenger so i figure i may as well customize it. ill throw some pics up soon..

The 70 tail swap will work with your original quarters.  I do prefer the 70-71 style markers (flush fit) though.  Also, the 70 tail panel is more readily available (aftermarket), which might make finding a rear panel easier. :thumbsup:

The tail lights aren't that bad.  If you aren't worried about the chrysler logo, PG Classics has the lenses for pretty cheap.  We put a set on the challenger and they look great!  B/E&A has the same tail lights with the logo's for a little more change.

the biggest issue with changing the front grille is the lack of headlight buckets once the fiberglass grille is removed so you either need 70 fenders or you need to find the headlight buckets & mount them into your fenders

yes , the rear tail panel is an easy swap , with the Cuda the front is actually somewhat easier as you have headlight buckts in place but you need the special for 70 only header panel to attach the grille

I thought I saw someone have the headlight buckets and side marker sampings so you could convert a 72 and newer fender to the 70/71 style, but I don't see them.  I did find the side marker stampings and B/E&A.  I have a set of 72 fenders I was going to convert but never got around to buying the parts.  With the 70 fenders available now, I might as well buy them, but it would still be a nice option.  Especially with my 72 fenders being in good shape.
