Fuel system
« on: November 02, 2009 - 02:55:56 AM »
Ok so the previous owner replaced some of the fuel system in my Challenger.  Gas tank, pump and filter.   I got the car and found the guage did not work.  So I pull the sending unit and it's completely rusted.  The pickup is completely corroded, the filter is rotten and plugged up, and the brass float is leaky and full of gas. The entire inside of the tube is rusty.  When I pulled it out of thr tank, rust dust was falling everywhere.  Not to mention the ground strap was so rusted it was not making contact.  The mechanic that was working on the car was working on the carb to get it to run.  I am not a mechanic by trade but I find that to be pretty damn funny.   I cannot imagine putting a sending unit like that back in the car especially after installing a new tank, pump and filter, then wondering why the carb is not right.  :screwy:

I know it's been answered before, I have read the posts, but where is the best place to get the best sending unit?

Also, Should I replace my lines?  I have not checked to see if they are rusty.  Are they stainless?

I have a very very slightly used cheap Ebay unit in my trash can, and a slightly more expensive unit from our pal Dave at Roseville in my car.  The ebay unit would sometimes give me clues about how much gas may be in the tank.  The Roseville part reads consistently.  If they didn't replace the rotted sending unit, I would bet that no one ever put stainless fuel lines in your car either. If the lines look rusty or badly bent now is the time to replace them since you will have the car up the air and the lines disconnected anyway. :2cents:

I got mine from Dave as well, no problems at all.  Others here have had problems though
