If you didn't drive it too much after it became loose it should be OK. The assembly (center section) should be removed and checked for any damage. The pinion depth should be checked and reset (new crush sleeve or solid shims). You'll need to replace the fluid and your pinion seal. I think that's about it. Provided ther's no damage I wouldn't expect it to cost over $100.00 for a reputable shop to do the repairs.

Pulled it this weekend.

The pinion nut was backed out against the pinon.  No loc tite.  The bearings appear to be destroyed.  Missing one of the nuts that hold the center section in.  No gasket, just silicone sealer.  Locking pawl was improperly installed, the axel adjusting nut was backed out against the brakes and fluid was leaking all over them.  Estimating about a .125endplay!  Non sure grip was filled with sure grip lube.

Yeah, your hack guys killed it. Once a set of gears gets noisey, unless you catch it very fast, ithey will always be noisey. They might not brake... but they wont be quiet any more. If it was me... I'd just plan to replace them. the 489 uses either a soli spacer, or the factory crush sleeve to preload the pinion bearings. That is what you need the rotating torque wrench and 260 pound feet of torque to set properly. You dont need locktite when things are set up right... Most nuts themselves have a swedge so they lock themselves. I would simply budget on re-doing the center section completely, use the sapcer not the sleeve, and re-gear it. I always run a gasket on the center section, and you can get tthe gaskets and seals for the axle bearing adjustment plates too. IMO, do it all, do it right, and forget about it.

Thanks Moper.

I picked up another one off Craigslist since the toasted one isn't posi.  The new one has the cone type posi with 3.55 gears. The pinion seal and bearinigs are shot, so those are getting replaced.  The shop checked the posi unit and it's fine.

I might keep the other one around to build into the ultimate rear end once I drop a big block inthe car.
