steering coupler removal
« on: November 14, 2009 - 05:55:01 PM »
I purchased a rebuild kit for the steering coupler. Does anyone have step by step instructions on how to do this for a 70 cuda (manual steering). I have read this "http://www.buschis-place.de/steeringcouplerrepair.htm" from an earlier post, but I don't see a "rag joint"? What steps are involved in removing the shaft??

Thanks..

No rag joint on these models as you have discovered.

Go to this link;

http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/1969-TSB-Index.shtml

Drop down to Chapter 19, find TSB No. 69-19-4 in the menu & click on the page numbers at the right to read each page.

I have read through those pages, they show the steps of the repair of the coupler "while" the column is being serviced  --- "completely removed"..    I already have the roll pin out & I took the bolts that attach the column on the firewall (3 + 2).. My question is -- Do I have to completely remove every piece of the column (as seen in the service overhaul) or is there another way of gaining access to slide the column "shaft" up for removal of the coupling???

Thanks again...

It has been a long time since I have done it, but you should unplug the steering column harness. There are two nuts on studs right near where the column enters the dash, remove those nuts & you can drop the column down & pull it back.

If you have not done it yet, you will need to disconect any linkage connected to the engine bay side of the column also.

Just did ours about two weeks ago. If you have any questions send a PM with a phone # and i'll give you a call. The project is fairly simple but a little info can make it real easy.
