Auto trans cooling lines
« on: November 10, 2009 - 03:54:31 AM »
Mine are leaking, sick of them. Had the trans shop replace the steel lines last year and guess what, another pinhole or two are on the new lines.

Are steel lines the only way to go? Rubber hose for 5 feet don't seem right but wounder what like race cars use. Mine rub but with headers its hard to keep them apart. Its the vibrations that are killing them. I drive hard too, speed across railroad tracks, etc

When I install new steel trans lines I have always cut 2 pieces of fuel line about one inch long, split it down on one side and put them over the trans line where the two run close together and used a plastic zip lock to tie together. The line clamping can be done in semi hidden places like under an engine mount. Depending how close and how long the lines are I will do this in several places.   :working:
A lot of original lines had a "C" clip to hold lines together but that didn't stop the vibrations.    :banghead:
Some motors have a bracket attached to usually the sump bolts for the lines to clip into, again I modify so that I can put a small piece of fuel hose over line. Done properly it can look neat and I haven't ever had a line failure.

+1 on the use of split fuel lines. I use the same thing. Plus, I use that trick on my oil lines to my external filters - and on my lower radiator hose. Has worked like a charm in every spot.

The racers use braided steel lines and AN fittings.  THey do make tranny coolers with AN fittings if you want to go that route.

The line companies like FineLines or Inline Tube do make stainless steel lines.  THey would be harder than the factory ones too.
