Looking For a '07 Charger Mentor
« on: October 30, 2009 - 02:17:24 AM »
Since I have driven Ford trucks and Mercury cars almost my whole life, I understand how they work and how to tune them up, etc.
Now that my son has a 2007 Charger, I need to find someone willing to  :1zhelp: answer my questions about the basics and not so basics of this car.

I solved the 1st problem tonight.  My son said his tire light came on.  Sure enough all 4 tires were 10 lbs low.  Added air and problem solved.

From looking at the owners manual I noticed it said to replace the spark plugs every 30,000 miles.  My Fords go much longer.
Is this a nightmare of a job on the 5.7?  I haven't been under the hood yet, so I don't know what to expect.

My wife said something about the car taking 7 quarts of oil.  That's another new one on me.  My F150 5.4L takes only 6 quarts.

:worshippy  Anyway, I'm ready to learn about our newest Mopar addition to the family so long as someone will take me under their wing and guide me.   :worshippy

Here's a short list of items I will be asking about:
- should I use fossil oil, synthetic blend, or 100% synthetic
- what type of oil filter (obviously not a Motorcraft)
- What type of fuel filter and location of it
- what type of air filter.  I'm thinking of getting a K&N to put into the original box (not cold air induction type...not yet anyway)
- spark plugs, any recommendations?  And should they be changed that often at 30k miles?
- does this engine have spark plug wires?  My F150 has COP system (coil on plug thus no wires)

Most of the issues relevant to the new Challenger will apply, so that may be a start.  Otherwise, off to one of the new Charger forums for you!  :chatting:

I'll give you a few...

Use a Wix filter
I wouldnt worry about a fuel filter, in the tank maybe?
On the cheap put a K&N in the stock box.  Better- put a K&N intake on.  Best- Get an AirHammer.  More on that later...
Use the recommended Champion plugs.  Oh, and if you havent heard, grab 16 of them...
Shouldnt be any plug wires on an '07.

Plugs arent too bad, pretty easily accessable, like any other HEMI, just more, lol.
Read the manual on the oil capacity...

Best place to be for info is www.lxforums.com  they know everything.  Just surfing the site and searching alone you will probably find all the answers, without asking a question.  Info on the AirHammer is there, too.

Hope this helps some.

I agree with Brooks & company. The Chargerforums are fantastic. I know a lot of my friends are on there, and they say it's a really informative site.
There are also some really good deals on the site if you are looking for parts.

To answer your question, the plugs are easy to replace. 50k? I don't know about that.
The oil filter-let's see, I think it should be easy enough to get to.
I would recommend the synthetic. It's a tuned engine, that runs in a cylinder defeat mode, so you shouldn't gamble.
There are some amazing kits available to get that sucker to move very fast.
All in all, it's one of our best cars.
I'm really happy to hear you have adopted a new mopar to the family.
I hope your ownership experience is a good one.
I know my friends wwho own 300s, chargers and magnums really love em, and have very little to complain about.

100% agreed on the wix filter.  IMO change the plugs but not only for the reasons stated. We've had lots of Mopes and Blue Ovals come in where the coils have been in SO LONG their frove in the hole. We had a 4.7 (granted alum intake) but we broke half of them tryn' to get them out........

Prob not lots of help but no charge.

Although the mine I work at uses Wix filters exclusively I find it hard to get them in town. I get Napa gold filters, supposed to be the same filter unless I have been misled. If you can afford it I would use synthetic in it. Sounds like a really cool car. Also I know it might sound cheesy but I always get one of the manuals from Autozone or Checker. Shows how to remove stuff without breaking it and generally makes life much easier when working on the thing.

Well, I replaced the air filter and we detailed the paint and interior.  I  popped the hood and man, that HEMI is sweet looking.  And the sound it makes on the highway is pure music.
Thanks everyone for the input, I'm still open to any tips or tricks on this beast that haven't been mentioned yet.  This car sure is a head turner.  The neighbor drove by giving a  out the window while we were washing it yesterday.

BIGSHCLUNK...a plug change sounds like a good idea.  What is OEM for chargers....champions?

The best recommendation is to follow the owners manual maintenance schedule"B" without exception. You can also add brake fluid flushes and power steering flushes to help out.
