wheel bearings
« on: November 22, 2009 - 10:42:21 PM »
Hello! Where can I purchase quality inner wheel bearings for the front rotors of my 74 challenger? Are they pressed in? What is the best way to remove the old ones?  :working:

Thanks,

Robert

You hold a hammer by the head, insert the handle into the outer bearing hole, Tap down and the bearing and seal pops out, wipe off your hammer. Any good auto parts store has those bearings and seals.  Clean all of the old grease out of the rotor and put some good Ford-Spec, Moly wheel bearing grease back in it.

You will need to remove the bearing cup as well, take a punch around 1/4" X 6" long, clean out the grease from inside the hub, turn the hub over so that the inner cone is underneath. You will notice 2 or 4 notches inside the hub, using the punch and a hammer tap out the inner cone, re-clean, turn over and tap new cone in so it bottoms, ideally you should use a brass punch to replace or a press, if you use a steel punch tap in gently going around the cone.   :2thumbs:
Make sure the cone is up the right way or you won't be able to get it out without wrecking the cone.   :banghead:
