How to fix broken bleeder screw?
« on: January 20, 2008 - 10:32:11 AM »
Anyone have a trick or proceedure for fixing a snapped of bleeder screw.  Do they make an oversized one?  I think the threads are 5/16 now, my tap doesn't seem to allow the bleeder to go in.  The threads line up with the bleeder.  I don't want to find another caliper, unless I have to.

Thanks everyone

Try Drilling it out with the next size drill, but not to big.......
You should be able to just see the original thread and pick the old bleeder bits out with a pick or small screwdriver. :drunk:

Get a left hand drill bit. Probably will back that right out. . by hand.

Used mine when my trans cooler fitting in the trans broke off. Same soft material. It backed right out with with the little 't-handle' with the left hand drill bit. Its not like a head bolt or something thats really torqued in there.

If that does happen, you would need a real steady hand with a small burr in a die grinder.

Sounds dangerous. :faint:

3/8-24 tap cleaned it out.  Never though it was that big.  The head on the bleeder was the 1/4" kind. :banghead:

Just thought I would post this here.  Have a bleeder screw that won't come out. Don't waste your time trying to get it out, or your money buying a new one.  5 minite removal tip.

1. just take chisel or grinder and chisel or grind it off flush.
2. take a 3/16" drill and drill down till you come to the the cross drilled hole that is in the bleeder.  You will see where that is on the new replacement.
4. take a 1/4" drill and drill down till you just break through the cross drill, slowly drill approx 1/16" futher but NO further
5. take a 10 penny nail, give is a very slight bend
6. slip the nail in the hose connection orifice and follow it into the small hole on opposite end where the bleeder is
7. give the nail a rap with a hammer  and the V shaped plug will pop out
Years ago I spent 3 hours trying to get one bleeder out then learned this trick and 5 mins later job done.
