Ballist resister?
« on: November 23, 2009 - 11:22:21 PM »
My car '' WAS ''  a 1970 with a 318 and points ignition. I'm putting in a 340 with electronic ignition. My new motor has the electronic distributor, I also have the orange electronic box shown in the first picture and I have a wiring harness (from Mancini Racing) that should adapt my points stuff to the electronic stuff.

Thank you for your help!!!
Will my original (pictured at the bottom) Ballist Resister work with the new stuff, OR, do I need the 4 prong Ballist Resister.

Where is your ballast from?  It should be OK as long as it was designed for your coil.

I don't think that's the ballast for the ignition.  Should be mounted seperately on firewall.  The wiper motor has a different non-ignition ballast on it.

I bought this yesterday at Advance Auto...... But there is nothing on it that tells which side 5 Ohm and which side is 1.2 Ohm....

Maybe I need the 2 pin Ballist, I'm awawy from the car, I'll get a look at it tonight....

THANKS again for all the input!!!

Your ignition module has 4 pins, not 5 like the diagram shown. You would use the two prong ballast resistor in that case.

You can still use the 4 prong ballast resistor you bought, just only hook up the 1.2 ohm side.

I'd get the correct 2 pin ballast, looks much better.

A multimeter will tell you which is which.
