Dead Gauges
« on: November 16, 2009 - 07:28:33 PM »
Hello,
OK down to brass tacks. I was driving my 73 challenger and turned on the heater. A short time later a parked and went into work. When I came out to go home later that afternoon I had no response from my Fuel and Temp gauge. I read that these gauges are linked so I thought it might be the little voltage reg. on the back. Long story short I pulled out and replaced the gauges with a set that worked when removed. The problem is not in the cluster. What might be the issue?

THANKS!!

There are only three common things between those two gauges. The voltage limiter you mentioned, the black wiring Wages mentioned, and fuse #6.

As far as I know everything mentioned was ok. I will pull it again tomarrow and check the wires, then the fuse to make sure. I don't mind the change over as i just converted to a dash with a clock. Was a long time coming. But I don't want to run out of gas before getting this fixed.  :clueless:

If the fuse is good and black wire that links the gauges (the 5Vdc) is connected, you will need to check that there is 12Vdc on the black wire from the harness going to the voltage limiter. If the 12vdc is there then the limiter is the problem.

DEAD FUSE was the issue. I feel like a dope!!

I had another question though. The new cluster I installed works great. The only issue I have resides in the new item installed, the clock. I am still not sure if I am going to run power to it as it is missing it's adjustment arm. But should I find an arm, restore the clock or just say screw it, where would I source the power for the little booger.
I see a bat, and acc. Terminal on my fuse box. Would that work or should I use another source.

THANK YOU !!

In your wiring harness behind the instrument panel there should be junction places were the ciggeratte lighter and other items tie to ,,I believe its a red or yellow junction plug that may have a spot were you can  plug it in directly with the right wire connector,,is your clock missing just the chrome tip or the whole arm? you can proably find the chrome piece an screw that holds it in place but the whole arm may be harder to find,,

Sadly the whole arm. I was so excited to find a panel with a clock I didn't notice that it was missing. It is not all bad I only paid 24 bucks for a complete Non-rally panel w/ clock in pretty good condition otherwise.

the water fuel & temp guage are all fed by the the voltage regulator so if thegas guage is working the regulator is working . The next step is to check for a pulsing 12v feed from the guage to the sending unit , if the voltage is there the sending unit must be bad
