340 R3 BLOCK QUESTION
« on: November 24, 2009 - 01:11:27 AM »
Hi everyone
I was looking at the r3 blocks here, to check out the specs and such:

http://www.jimsautoparts.com/mopar_performance_blocks.htm

I am looking at this section:
SMALL BLOCK CAST IRON "R3" RACE ENGINE BLOCKS

I am new/still learning about engines, so it is not obvious to me.
My question is P5153478AB a race block too? It is under that section, but the others have race,r3 while this one has 340 replacement. I was wondering what was the difference in what makes the others race,r3 while this one is 340 replacement. Is this one not as strong as the others below?

Thanks

The chart in the center explains the difference in the blocks.  Some are rough bored, some are finish honed, some are 48* lifter bore and some are 59*.......

I remember that 340 blocks have original 10bolt head fastening? And they accept stock style camshafts and bearings. R3 use special camshafts, 50mm bore in the block if i remember correctly.

If you're looking to do something with a semi-reasonable budget, you want the 340 Siamese Resto Block.  this will maintain your stock deck height (9.599"), stock valvetrain angle and stock oiling system.  Any deviation from this will involve extraordinarily expensive parts.

Here's an interesting article on a race block based 340 engine.

Thanks,
With the block being a siamese bore, does it make it less streetable/have a possibility of overheating?
