SB right angle oil filter adapter
« on: December 04, 2009 - 07:23:00 PM »
Car is sitting in the exhaust shop now with its new oil pan on / which I have hear has no leaks! I decided to let a shop do it since the guy is cool and they have a hoist.

I install the 340 HP manifolds before taking the car in and drove it up there a few miles with open manifolds (tip, use ear plugs if you ever do that, my ears rang all night, lol)

My straight oil filter is in the way on the passenger side. No way I am told he can hook up that side.

MP makes a 90 degree oil filter adapter which is at the shop now but some guy there is like saying those can be a problem to seal and even if you do it leak later on, the main guy is like maybe but he think it be good since many new cars have them now.

But then Headman makes shorty pipes. I wanted just to run those on the passenger side but they guys claim its a bad idea cause that side with always be too lean / or the other side too rich.

This stinks, I'm sick of the problems with long tube headers / if the oil pan leaks again its going right back and I don't want to screw around with unbolting the headers.

My 90* doesn't leak. You can also run PH16 its half the depth.... Take a look at the Christmas Giving thread.......  :grinyes:

By the way, thats a FRAM number, do not run FRAM (just a referance)  :thinkerg:

Well it has the K&N 2004 which is the short oil filter, is there a shorter filter yet?

I understand the stock 340 adapters were made of cast iron but MP new ones which I got from Summit for $182 (ouch) is made of aluminum but then the manger is like all new cars have aluminum now and don't leak.

OK found a smaller oil filter, K&N 1002, is shorter and narrower-the gasket is on the outside edge of the filter.

The shop owner was there today and he is like you plan on changing the filter every month? Most guys want a larger filter not smaller, ha ha.

So I think it would have made enough room but he tells me the shorties are the way to go. The center link is right below the collectors, didn't have the pipes with me yet thanks to slow Fedex but seems like there maybe enough space to make the 90 degree turn, I know Monday.

Well the shorties are $290 to my door-they did finally show up, the brand new MP adapter is $190 (I have no more time to waste, snow should be around here soon).

So cost wise the shorties are cheaper since I can ebay those 340 hp manifolds for like more than the shorties cost and get my money back for the adapter.

Plus he felt the shorties would flow a bit better than the 340 hp manifolds.

So we eyeball everything out and it looks good, I get both manifolds off and the shorties slip right on without even lifting the motor at all BUT then one side hit the engine block! I'm like what, wounder if Headman messed up--these did have a few scrapes got them from Jegs--but they are like headers are always a pain to work with...so the HP manifolds went back on...

8 days later and its back home  :D

Looks pretty good, oil pan is dry, the rear main leaks a bit once turn off but it was not changed so that is ok with me.

The manifolds aren't bad, right side has a little leak but you can not hear it with the hood closed...I need to find where it is, if were it bolts to the head some rtv might do it..or I could get it resurfaced.

The adapter did leak a tad on him and he redid it over, seems fine running but then later on I seen one drop of oil at the end on the filter..he did say bring it back once it gets out of storage come springtime and he re-check it out.

Stinks snow is finally coming for tomorrow...did one wot pass in second gear--not bad at all with no headers and those 340 manifolds and sure is neater looking underneath it. Plus wasn't so loud either..more cool I feel...many cars are loud ad quick but less so are the quick but not so loud cars.
