Turning a '70 in to a '72 Challenger T/A....1/24 scale....

Here's a model I made for 72challorange (Tom).  A little something for Christmas. 

It's based on a '70 Challenger T/A model.  It's tough to find a '72 Challenger model so I used this kit but I made some changes to the grill and tailpanel and some other custon touches.

These are some of the basics.

I changes the grill by cutting out the '70 grill, moving it forward then made the '72 grill moulding.  Tom doesn't have chrome trim on his so this model doesn't either.



The tail panel was made by cutting out the '70 style tallights and using cardboard making the shape of the '72 style lights.  The actual "lenses" are made with a piece of foil spray painted candy apple red with a cardboard backing for support.  D-O-D-G-E letters were then added.

"422 Stroker" would be tough to make so I went with 422 Six Pak.  I don't think ChallengerGary had these in stock in 1/24 scale. 



I added "Viper" brake calipers and 17" rims from a 1970 Pontiac Trans Am 2 'n 1 kit.



1970 style Challenger T/A stripes minus the "T/A" as Tom's car is.



I even upgraded Tom's car to rear disk brakes!

  That's pretty cool. Nice bit of scratch building.  I bought a bunch of kits thru the summer to start back with my building/dios for this winter. It's wierd how there is no later year chally's or cudas available.  I tried to see your photobucket site but the link needs a password.  Keep on building.         Doug

Yeah, the later Chally/Cudas are a little tough to find and are a bit more expensive usually.  That's why I went with the '70 but also since Tom's car is has a lot of T/A equipment, I had to use this Challenger T/A kit.

Made this for Tom as he was good guy and gave me a hood for my car. Thanks again, Tom!    When your settled shoot me a PM with your address.  It'll be here for ya.

I like cars and could never afford all the real 1:1 versions so models work well.

Yeah, lots of models collect dust.  That's why I don't go too crazy on some of the detail, even if I was as capable as bentpushrods, lee01, Cody or some of the other members.  Those guys are good! 

I like to make them but try not to get too bogged down in them.  I have a couple of cars that need a lot of custom work that I put them aside.  Some custom work is fun once you get into it but some is a headache.  Currently I'm working on a 1972 Holden Monaro GTS Pursuit Special that you guys may remember from the movie Mad Max.  It was the MFP police car stolen by the Nightrider.  It's based on a 1972 GTO model.

I like to sort of speed through some of the major stuff.  I break up the kit into the various large paint groups for spray paint (Don't have an air brush...)  Usually broken up into body color parts, chassis color, interior color, silver/aluminum stuff, flat black stuff, then engine color.  Those little cardboard trays under those waterbottles you buy serve as little paint platforms that I group the colors.  Then it's justa  matter of spraying all the parts one side at a time to get most everything painted.

This method speeds it up for me a lot and when they are all organized then when I run down to the basement to get somthing from the freezer or throw in a load of laundry I can shoot a tray of parts.  With 3 little kids you have to sqeeze in some time to enjoy for yourself.
