Mileage question..
« on: December 21, 2009 - 01:22:27 PM »
Does the mileage showing make any difference when buying? I read somewhere that after a vehicle is 10 years old the mileage is not required to be accurate. Thanks for your help..

The laws of every State are different. Here mileage exempt is after 25 years if registering a historic car.

Most of these cars have had the engine rebuilt or replaced somewhere along the line, so the odometer reading is pretty much meaningless unless you know for a fact otherwise.

State laws vary, most have laws against resetting odmeters if that is what you mean?

Its  called mileage exempt ten years or 100k which ever comes first .
The only way to prove mileage is with state inspection mileage records .
Careful what you post, The finger pointing pompous self-righteous folks will go straight to the legal no no finger wagging well intended but misguided edge of total paranoia that some ones out to steel the proverbial cookie jar .That said ,spelled odometer mileage has very little value .GB

Long, long time ago I called someone about a car I found in Hemmings.  I asked him about the mileage & he said, "It doesn't matter, the car needs to be restored any how."

That always stuck with me.

If a car was a survivor (in the truest sense), it might make a difference.  :dunno:

I remember back when it used to be more of a concern.  I think it's the newer daily driver rig type that matter.

In my state when you sell a car when you sign over the title to the new owner you as the seller are required to sign a form that the miliage shown is accurate or not actual/unknown. Comes down to what you advertise and what is factual and honesty, prevents potential legal issues. And beleive me lying to the state will cost you more than lying to a buyer, state governments, judges, and courts tend to stick together.  :roflsmiley:

:iagree:  Georgia is pretty much the same way.  There is a place on the Title that you check stating the mileage is accurate or not accurate. No big deal on an older car, just don't be dishonest and get called on the carpet for it.   :2thumbs:

The GTX I just aquired says 79K on the odometer... who cares,  its not the original engine... it needs total resto... and I cant even guess when it was run last....

I ran into an interesting situation with the ongoing ground up restoration of my T/A a year or so back.  I had some of the components including the rally dash in with a guy who specializes in instrument restoration, and one of the things he was doing while restoring my parts was replacing my old yellowed odometer with a fresh unit.  He put the numbers on the new one at "00000.0".  I questioned that, and he said that is typically what is done during a ground up restoration, but said that he could set the numbers to match what was shown on my old odometer if I desired.
I posted online to ask people in the hobby's opinions, in a addition to asking the guy restoring my car about what he typically does with ground up restorations.
The consensus was that yes, during ground up restorations, the odometer is set to zero.
So some might scream like little girls who just got their Christmas candy taken away about this subject and how anyone who does it should get locked up for life, but at least for ground up restorations, it is commonplace.

I can see as a ground up restoration when every item is as new and show quality, but on the other hand, take my car for example. It was totally taken apart in 1973 , every item was off the car. When I purchased the car, it came with the original dash and everything else that was on the car when taken apart. I am not planning on a ground up resto on my car, but want it to show the actual mileage that the car has on it total. My speedo needle shakes, and the trip reset isnt working. I was planning on letting rt specialties rebuild my speedometer , clock, and a tach that MEK sent to me.  If they cant do that for me, then maybe they can just give the speedo a good clean and lube job so it works good and retains the actual stuff. I have like 45,950 original miles on the complete body. I got a tune up reciept somewhere here stating that it had a tune up with like 39k on it or so in early 73.

I wouldnt whine and cry if it was set at all zeros again, but would prefer to keep it in actual reading miles if I could.

I suppose you can do the odometer any way you want, the only problem could come if you misled the new owner of what the actual miliage was, thus the signed statement that yes it was actual or unknown. Doubtful if anyone is going to not buy a car because of miliage shown, but you wouldn't want to be lied to either. Re: the speedo is broken, it was acurate when it quit working, but you now do not know how many miles are on it, so actual miles are "unknown". And yes in this state if you mislead a buyer and he can prove that, you will be in court if he pursues it, jail time, not likely but your pockects will be a lil lighter.  :roflsmiley:
