Tubular Front Suspension
« on: December 30, 2009 - 06:00:06 PM »
Has anyone have any good advice on the different coil over suspension conversions for e-bodies? I'm looking into the Alterktion piece, control freaks kit, XV Motorsports. I have also seen that Mr Norm's Garage has a suspension kit as well, it looks alot like the control freaks set up. Has anyone used any of these products? I'm in the planning budget stage for a 73 Cuda' that I would like to handle as good as it looks. The initial plan is to have a 6.1 hemi w/ auto overdrive, dana rear end. Classic looks with modern technology. Any comments would be a great help.

Thanks

I would stay away from the Magnum force unit , Track use only IMO
the AlterKtion is a good set up most who have used it love it & it has a front sway  bar which most don`t

Control Freaks/Mr. Norm's is a copy of the Alterkation.  Dude bought an Alterkation to put in a jig, then redid everything in tubular steel.

Haven't heard of anyone running those so not sure if you want to be the Guinea pig.  Hundreds and hundreds has the Alterkation with no report of failures.

XV Level II is $pendy, but definitely looks trick.  Requires some welding too, but I'm sure you can't go wrong w/this setup.

If you just want good street handling equivilent to a modern sports sedan, you can get there with the stock stuff and a select number of items for a very reasonable price.

If your after reduced weight, highly adjustable suspension, with the ability to quickly change spring rates, with a lot of WOW! factor then a tubular system is the answer.

No personal experience with any of them.

:iagree: with all I am a happy owner of the alterktion and no complaints.

Bill will add the 6.1 mounts onto the frame for you also and has a nice rear set up.

The xv looks nice but still a little pricey for vett stuff.  :2cents:

What ever you go with, if it was me I'd make sure you could go back to stock without to much trouble, and keep all the parts to go back to stock. Looks like car values are highest kept stock. Are not the new Hemi's pretty heavy? If your after handling you'd want it as light as possible? Just my  :2cents: :dunno:

What do they weigh? as compared to an old style small block with aluminum heads intake etc...? I read someone saying they were heavy motor? I'm no expert though? :dunno:

shipping weight on a 6.1L based engine, sounds pretty light to me....figure in the weight of the pallet / box it's shipped in adds to it...

I'm not sure agree with Keeping 72-74's stock makes them have higher values. That may be right for the HIGHLY collectable 70-71s  but having a modern suspension on a 73 would definitely make it have a higher value than a 73 with a stock suspension.

You might also want to look into Hotchkis' setup. Its alot cheaper than the alterkation or XV setup but doesnt reduce the weight.

I was told my 6.1 was 200 lbs lighter than a 360  but I never checked that for a fact.

I agree keep all your parts so you can go back stock if you want to.

I have heard the 3G Hemi is lighter than a comparable small block, but I forget how much.
