I need to make some choices regarding a new rearend.
« on: August 18, 2004 - 10:42:49 AM »
I am getting ready to purchase a new Moser60 and wanted to get some input.   I pretty much was going to get one with stock dimensions for an E-body.  The tires and rims I am going to mount on the rear are 17x9.5's with 285/40 17 tire mounted on them.  My question is "would there me any benefit to having a rearend built that was an inch shorter on each side? "  Keep in mind I haven't purchased the wheels yet and I can have the appropriate offset depending on the width of the rearend.
Also, what gear would you guys go with if you have a car that will be street driven, 700hp big block, and a 5 speed with .64 overdrive?

It depends how deep you want the wheels to look , a shorter diff will allow a deeper wheel with more offset , personally I feel it would look better with a deeper wheel
4.10 will give you an effective 2.62 final drive ratio with .64 OD
4.56 will give you an effective 2.91 final drive ratio
4.88 gives you 3.12 final drive ratio
persoanlly I would use 4.10 for the best of both worlds, lots os multiplication stop light to stop light & lots of top end & low rpm at 70-80 mph depending on the cam used in the engine as you do not want to run much below the powerband of the cam & lug the engine as it will not be effeicent that way either

4.10 was what I was thinking of going with and it makes me feel a better about that choice to hear you recommend it.

On the issue of how wide to get the housing, I was thought that the only thing this would allow was the deeper wheel as you were saying, but didn't know there is anything else I needed to be aware of.

Thank you for your input!  Your the man!

The sixties B-body rearend works well with the bolt in spring relocation kit
Maybe you want them to build the rear that size
Saves about 3/4 inch on each side to tuck those tires under the car 8)

Can't believe it!  Called Moser today about getting a new rearend and they don't have the factory dimesions for the Dana 60 for a 70-74 E-body!  I figured they could use them to start out with and I could make the adjustments I wanted from there.  Anyway I told them I needed 59.2 inches from end of the axle shaft to end of the other axle shaft, 54.936 from one end of the housing to the other and the housing end type for a dana 60.  Guess they need the pinion offset too.  I have no idea what that would be.   Any body know what a good offset would be?   Also, just to double check the axle bolt pattern on an e-body is 5x4 1/2, right?

5 on 4.5" circle is correct
you can get the offest measuring from the springs to the center of the yolk , , it is ususally offset 1.5" to the right approx

Hey HD, what is this setting you back if you don't mind me asking? I am considering a beefy setup as well, I am running 560 hp and 591 fpt. I don't know if I am going to stick with the 8 3/4 489 housing. Are you getting this complete bolt and go with disc brakes and the works?  :D

It will be close to $2300.  I am going with the Moser60 with 4.10 gears, Detroit locker, aluminum cover, billet yoke, and adjustable snubber.  I have a set of front and back Baer disk brakes already and chose them over the Wilwoods.  I have been told that the Wilwoods are more designed for drag racing with light weight being a concern more than durability.  I decided on the locker because of the power I plan to put to it.  They were telling me that with close to 700hp, if I like to drive hard, the posi wouldn't last too long before being serviced.  If it becomes too much of a nuisance, I could always go to a posi later.  :-\

http://www.moserengineering.com/

Check it out under the new products.  ;D

I just got off the phone with them and placed my order.  I got a different guy this time and I just told him I wanted a direct replacement for a 70' Charger.  ;D
That was no problem and they had all the specs already.  Both guys I have talked to there, were very nice and easy to deal with.  My total with the above options was $2292.   I will pay the freight directly to the carrier and was estimated at $120 to $150.
I didn't think the price was too much more than buying are rebuilding an old Dana.  Plus, the new one is supposed to be a little stronger.
