Did I identify this trans correctly? Also few questions
« on: December 21, 2009 - 03:38:10 AM »
Hi,

We bought a new mopar into our houshold a month ago or so. It's a -90 Dodge B250 van and we bought it mainly as a construction van (We are starting a house project during spring). While I was changing the engine oils yesterday I was able to wiggle under the car and take a couple of photos from the transmission. As far as I gathered from the net it seems to be a 46RH, correct?

There are couple of problems with the tranny atm. The tailshaft seems to indicate that this trans has OD, if so it isn't working. The light on the OD button on the dash panel lits when pressed but nothing happens. Also I think that this should have lockup converter, if so I'm also missing that one too. Nevertheless, the trans shifts very snappy and no signs of slipping. The fluid seems to be bit oldish but no signs of burning.

One weird thing is that on some occasions when coming to stop lights and idling in a D-gear, the gear drops off after 1-2mins of idling. Only way to get it back on is to run the gear selector back and forth a couple of times (some sticking on the main valve or something?). It seems to happen only when oils are cold.

On all my Dodges when the OD light is on it indicates that you have turned the overdrive OFF and I believe that when the vehicle is turned off it resets to the ON setting.
I'd say change the fluid & filter...be sure to use the correct Chrysler fluid, I've seen several issues caused by the incorrect fluid.

Yes,it is a 46RH (518)

If the connector in this pic has 2 wires,it is a NON LOCK UP.
Three wires,it is a LOCK UP

The sensor in this pic,if it is bad (VERY COMMON TO GO BAD) it will not have OD or LU.

Does the speedometer work?
Does it only crank the engine in Park and Neutral?

Thanks for the reply!

The speedo works fine. The rear sensor is the speedometer sensor, correct? I will try to crawl under the car tomorrow again and check the connector if it is lockup or not. The whole thing is just so dirty that it could use some pressure washer. Sadly it's been about 5 fahrenheit for the past 3 weeks or so and I cannot wash it easily anywhere inside.

What else affects on the OD than the rear sensor? I think that I read that the engine coolant temperature also affects it or atleast on the lockup. Can I test the OD by making a jumper wire to run direct 12 volt into the OD solenoid pin?

Not sure if it cranks in some other gear than park. I'll test it tomorrow. Sometimes I have to wiggle gear selector few times to get it crank so there is contact failure somewhere. Is that a sign of neutral safety switch going bad?

Luckily this isn't our daily driver so I can work with it freely. I'll do the trans oil change after the new year and I will also try to troubleshoot the OD more deeply then. Does the OD solenoid have tendency to go bad, if so, mechanically or electronically?

Here is a simplified wiring diagram
70 Cuda, 7.0L Gen-III Hemi, Viper T56 w/9310 gearset, 3.91's, Megasquirt MS3x v3.57, Innovate wideband, Firm Feel upper arms, torsion bars, springs and strut rods, QA1 DA shocks. I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....
