Recommended West Cost plate to rebuild power steering box.
« on: January 06, 2010 - 07:44:12 PM »
The title says it all. I'm in orange country Ca. and would like to know if there is any recommended shops on the left cost that come highly recommended for restoration on a power steering box. I was told there was some shop called Steering Gear or something like that back east but would like to avoid heavy shipping charges and streight exchange as I don't know how bad the new box really is.

I had a member donate at box to my project. The box may be fine it may need to be redone so I don't want to risk giving away a good box for a good box.

I was looking on line and found that Napa has these box's available. Does this look right?

i have seen shops asking a couple hundred bucks to rebuild the old one. Am I missing something?

Firm Feel is in Washinton. Steer and Gear is in Ohio.  Both do the police type box for rebuild in different stages depending on what you want for road feel.

The last time I needed one it came from NAPA.

If you are concerned about keeping your original one for any reason, then send it off & have it rebuilt.

The trouble I'm having is that the steering has a slight bump steer. So when I am on the road it grabs everything and tends to be a little sloppy. It is my driver so I need to get a new or rebuilt box before I can down the car. So it can be done in one or two days rather then have it down for a couple of weeks.

Do you think the new box would have the same problem. Is a degree of slop normal? The car has a totaly new PST Poly front end in it and was just aligned.

Did you try a different caster setting to see if it helped?

I wouldn't know how to do that.
