Vapor Separator/Fuel Filter
« on: January 26, 2010 - 03:31:36 PM »
I have a question regarding the vapor separator/Fuel Filter use on a 70 challenger 44 six pack setup.  I have seen cars advertised as numbers matching with a fuel filter located betweent the fuel pump and vapor separator using rubber fuel hoses.  I have also seen cars without the fuel filter installed with the line running from the carb to a point near the separator and then connected with a short rubber hose.

I have read where the strainer on the sending unit in the tank in addition to the separator and an inlet screen on the carb acts as a filter and therefore one is not needed.  Can anyone weigh in on this and advise what is correct.

I can't say what is correct, but I would not run without a fuel filter. That strainer, or sock on the sending unit is only good for larger debris. I would think your carb screen would get plugged up much quicker than a fuel filter would.    :2cents:

This link explains it- it appears as though the separator acts as th filter.

I ran just the vapor separator on mine with the 6 pack, and had no problems.  The last time we had the carbs off, we did not se anything in the filter traps on the carbs, so no issues.

The vapor separator is a fuel filter- it has a filter element in it. In later years, the filter/vapor separator was installed on practically everything. For numbers matching, you need the one from the original setup, but there are replacements out there for us to run on our drivers.
