Anybody ever see one of these ?
« on: October 24, 2010 - 09:55:48 AM »
I was sitting on my front porch at 9:30 pm when I saw this little bird hovering around my flowers. I thought how weird for a hummingbird to be out at night. I have never seen one after dark. I ran in grabed my Nikon D90 and took some shots. When I uploaded them I was quite surprised to see this. I had no idea what it was so i googled it and turns out to be what is called a Hawk Moth. You never know what comes out after DARK !!!

Cool. I've never seen one. With the reflection in the eyes it looks like Mothra. You sure Godzilla was hiding somewhere?

Awesome pictures!  I'm surprised the flash didn't scare it off after the first shot.

Nice pics.

I've seen plenty of these before. Especially when I lived closer to Central CA. They're Tomato Hornworm moths. If you ever grow Tomato plants, you might find one when they're in the Larvae stage munching away. Get huge, almost 2 inches long before Pupae stage. They don't normally eat the Tomatoes, just the leaves which is no big deal since Tomato plants grow so fast.

If you have kids, they'll enjoy watching the metamorphisis to moth. They're great to keep fed in a jar with fresh Tomato leaves daily. Just put 2 inches of soil on the bottom. Because they dig into the soil when they turn to pupa stage. A few weeks later and it will dig out into a very large moth.
