E-Body Engine & trans mounting questions

 I mocked up my 440 block & trans to locate my front & mid plates since my Keith Black Hemi block has no motor mount bosses. To me it seems that the engine and trans sits too far forward. I have had 4 E-bodies project cars but never really paid attention to where it sits in the engine bay. I have like 3" of clearance from the firewall to the bellhousing. Also I purchased what I was told was an E-Body cross member. The bolt holes don't line up but it is different in appearance to my B-Body cross member. I am guessing I have A-Body cross member in error.

 I took some photos of the factory Big block motor mount showing it all bolted up correctly, another of the distance from the firewall to bellhousing. The pics with the brown primer cross member is supposed to be the E-body cross member. The pics with the black painted cross member is my B-Body cross member. Not only do they not even come close to mounting to the trans if you look closely the bolt holes are all off too.

 Does anyone have a pics of the correct E-Body trans cross member? Does the distance from the firewall to bellhousing look to be correct? Will even an E-Body cross member put the ttrans mount the 2-1/2" further forward  that I need?

does the suspected a body cross member have holes that go straight down thru the motor mount pads on the k? on an abody the use mounts that have a stud on each end you put a nut thru the bottom of the pad. instead of using a thru bolt like an e body. that would help identify your unknown k frame

on an e body trans crossmember you can install the mount in 2 ways. ! way is for the 4 speed and the other is for automatics, just by installing backwards. If you did it backwards, it will move the engine forward some, but just not 3 inches

I did get some pics that someone forwarded to me on Moparts. I have conformed that I do have the incorrect cross member & it looks to me that the motor & trans does sit further forward than what I am used to in my B-body. Now does anyone have an extra E-Body trans cross member they would like to get rid of?

Well that probably explains why I had to redrill the outer holes in bit different locations to get the trans crossmember to fit in my car (-73 Chal). My original was long gone and I got this replacement crossmember from my car dealer. On -70 crossmember the outer holes are somewhat wider apart?

As long as at least 2 of the bolt holes line up in the body & everything else is the same to mount to the trans I should be O.K. Mine is a 70' but form the sound of it I can use a 71-74 also, right. Just the outer to holes will not line up & would have to be redrilled if wanting to bolt up all 4, correct?

Yeah as far as I know the inner ones should fit even if you use wrong year crossmember, that is if mine is 70 and that's the reason why I had to redrill the outer ones.

So if you aren't looking for number matching resto you should be able to easily fit later year crossmember there

O.K. Hope so. Thanks for all of the help guys. I appreciate it alot.
Man, I have had (4) E-body project cars in my days & this is the closest one I have had to running/driving condition & I still can't believe all of the one year only special things on a 70 Challenger over all of the other years.
