what dash gages?
« on: January 26, 2010 - 12:39:07 AM »
a bud of mine has found a 72 challenger that needs restored and he wants to buy it.

the guy selling it says it is a 340 car and the serial number seems right, because it has the plate on the dash saying jh23h2bxxxxxx.

the thing thats got me wondering about it is that the dash only has 1 big round gage for the speedo, then 4 smaller gages to the right, gas, temp and charge i think, with the 4th one blank ?

is that the right dash gages for a 72 340 car ?

i thought the 340 cars all had the 4 big round gages ?  speedo, tach, etc, etc ?

anybody know whats right ?

I don't know too much about the 72s, but the standard cluster is probably the right one.  The rallye gauges were ordered seperately and weren't tied to which engine the car had.  Lots of AAR and TA cars still had the standard guages.

See the page at this link;

http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/images/dealerships/DealershipDataBook/1972/72_Challenger0017.jpg

That displays what has to be one of the rarest of all options: steering column delete.  Wonder how many of those lower panels were ever made ;)

Question though; the text says "Simulated wood-grain finish is standard on Rallye models, optional on all other models with the Rallye cluster."

The only NON-woodgrain rallye clusters I've seen have been customs (some beautiful ones too).  What was the non-woodgrain finish being referred to here?  Or is the text incorrect?

I have a '72 Challenger with the non-rallye gauges and I can take a snapshot of my gauges and post them.  My 4th gauge (right most one) is not blank and I believe it is the clock, but I'll need to check b/c my memory plays tricks on me.

I don't have the simulated wood grain finish, so mine is the black plastic finish, which I believe is the standard one the text refers to.

Here is a photo of the gas, temp, and amp gauges (left to right) with the speedometer edge just barely showing on the left edge of the photo.

Here is a photo of the amp gauge and the last one on the right being the tach gauge.  My Challenger has a 4 speed manual transmission, but my original tach gauge has seen better days.  There is an after market tach mounted on the dash above the original one (after market tach not pictured).

Since it is a base model JH car, it would have the standard gauges, unless rallye gauges were ordered as an option.

A JS Challenger would have the Rallye gauges standard, being a Rallye model.

This applies to 70-72 since there were no JS cars after 72.

For '72 if I'm not mistaken, the Rallye gauges could only be had with the Rallye package, regardless of engine size (except for the slant 6 engine), not as a stand alone gauge option.  I think that it may have been theoretically possible to get a 318 Rallye car.

That being said, those are the right gauges for a JH car.
