Slapstik removal - cleaning with what and then lubricate with what?

I would like to remove and clean my Slapstik shifter assembly while I have the chance, how and what do you recommend I should do to it? What cleaning agent did you use and once finished, what did you use to lubricate it with, I have both White Lithium and Gray grease?

Neil - Thanks, any ideas on which solvent to use and shoud it be a spray or try to soak?
I just want to remove the carpet fuzz and varnish that has resided in the mechanism?

Carb cleaner , brake clean ,varsol if you have a tank ,all will work

Nick, I used brake cleaner.... no residue! And second the white lithium!

Blow it out real good with compressed air. They get a lot of lint/fuzz & trash being where they are. I think mine had a few Mcdonald's french fries down in there along with some pocket change!
