Fenders to body sealant
« on: February 06, 2010 - 09:41:31 PM »
I saw this stuff and it sounds like it may be the right type of stuff to use between the fender and the apron panel edge.

Anyone use it and does it replicate the foamy stuff in between like the factory used?

When I first took off my fenders, there was a brown foamy stuff in between.

My theory is that the fenders need a more forgiving pliable material that is durable, waterproof, and doesn't peel off easily like silicone could. At high RPM's your front end is vibrating pretty hard. Too hard a cauling transfers vibrations into the front.

Be sure that you have good fittment on the fenders first, if you have to move the fenders for alignment it will get messy and not leave the area lokking good for paint.

The auto paint store I went to this week had one brand of foamy glue that sets up in 1 minute. I can't figure out how anyone can hang a fender on and have it done before it dries within that time frame.

Well this isn't the original way but I think that you could first install the fender and then seal it afterwards from the outside, inside the wheel well. This way the sealant wouldn't be between the fender and body, just on corner of the fender and body but it should prevent the moisture getting between gap.

I think that the main use for the sealing is to keep the water from the wheel well entering inside the engine bay?

I haven't decided yet what stuff I'm going to use so I would also appreciate if someone has solid knowledge of stuff that holds there.

I spoke with Tony (fishin4cuda) on the subject today.

He mentioned that the foamy stuff dries up really quick and doesn't give you much time to work with it. I suppose you could have everything rehearsed on panel alignment, using colored 3M tape on its final fit line up as guide point/areas. Then squirt it on top of apron edges and work really fast.
