calling tactransman - 727 suggestions
« on: February 16, 2010 - 05:12:09 AM »
Hi Terry,

I read your excellent rebuild/upgrade thread but I only have a little experience with transmissions and I'm not sure how far I really want/need to go.

I want to upgrade a 727 to go behind a 360 Magnum which I will be swapping into the 'cuda later in the year.  The engine is 10:1 CR with a lively cam so should be quite revvy.  Rear is 3.23 suregrip.

The 727 I am looking at using was originally behind an early magnum 318; I believe 1993.  I haven't used it and I don't know what vehicle it's from but there's no sign of anything wrong with it.

I plan to use the original convertor which came with this trans. and which is 10 and a bit inches (I know about balancing the flex plate).

This car is for regular street use and will only see the odd run down the strip.

So I know you are going to say put a Transgo kit in it - should I just leave it at that? and is there anything I should check for on this transmission before I get started?

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve..........   If it is a '93 I would make sure it is NOT a lock up style.

I do not know if you have seen this thread or not but there is a bunch of good info here:

Yeah, that's the thread I was talking about, I thought it was excellent.

I'm just not sure how far I ought to go beyond just fitting the shift kit as my car is for regular street use.

I think I already decided it's not a lock up - I can't remember why I decided that, it was a while ago - I'll need to double-check my thinking there.

Thanks

Put the Transgo kit in it with the mods in the Archive thread.
Change the rear servo with a Sonnax billet one.(the stock cast one likes to crack)

Make sure you have a 3.8 ratio lever for 2nd gear.

OK thanks for clarifying - I wasn't sure if some of it was like "race only" or something.
