Converting 23 spline to 18 spline 833
« on: February 28, 2010 - 01:57:38 PM »
Trying to get an idea what it takes and what it would cost to convert a 23 spline into an 18 spline. Re-conditioned one's go anywhere from $1,200 to 2K or more.

Perhaps it would be more cost effective to DIY conversion?
Any good upgrades to do while apart?

Passon sell the Hemi overdrive conversion.

Has anyone done this? Does it include everything to do a 18 spline conversion?

So far I see the cluster gear, the main shaft, the input shaft all need to be changed out. Bearing retainer too it appears.

Also, new pressure plate, clutch, and throw out bearing. It looks like there's quite a few parts inside that are shared by both.

Here is the list to copy, then add so far what is all needed:

Cluster gear
Main shaft
Frt. Bearing retainer
Main shaft
Input shaft
Pressure plate
Clutch
Throw out bearing

You would also need a case it yours does not use the "308" bearing.  I don't think you need to replace the main shaft, just the 3 gears on it.

Well it looks like that kills that idea. My trans is a small block 833 E body.

the clutch can be used but the disc will be the wrong spline if you have a 23 spline , the mainshaft is differetn also as the od requires a smaller collar on the shaft to ride on
Passon has the Hemi OD with a new case all assembled but it is not cheap , top quaility trans though

I've thought about doing the same thing with an 833 from a 70 big block Challenger.  There was a shop up north some where that listed the necessary parts to convert a 23 spline to a 18 spline on Ebay.  May still be there so check that out.

I guess my question is do you need to?  Are you breaking components?

Not yet.

I was just wanting to get an idea if it was more affordible to DIY upgrading. I won't be running slicks ever so I think it's probably safe running my 23 spline just as it is. Engine will be 550-600 HP.

My guess is the 23 spline input won't be the weakest link in your drive train.
