rookie clutch question
« on: October 04, 2004 - 08:10:20 AM »
Good day all,
So I'm replacing the clutch in my Challenger, and by the way this is my first manual trans ( always had the autos ) so here is a question that I couldn't find anything on in past threads -
The clutch I removed is a 10.5 dia. 23 spline 3 finger Borg ( you will be assimilated )
I have noticed that they sell 11" dia. 23 spline clutches as well.

1 - would an 11" fit and would there be any benifit?
2 - I have a mild 440 that is in the neighborhood of 400 to 425 HP, would the replcement 10.5 be just fine for my app.?

Things I've learned are as follows -

1 - Diaphram style clutches no matter who makes them are junk ( I read a magazine article on how great they are and then read past threads to learn that it's not so )
2 - A manual trany even without the bellhousing and clutch still is heavy enough to crush rocks
3 - Don't be so concerned about the clutch smashing your face that you let your ratchet fall on your head
4 - The wife DOES NOT apprecite you throwing your work clothes that smell like old trany fluid in the basement

I'm done rambling so any advice and or opinions are welcome, and thanks in advance!! ;D

I can relate
this  is about to get confusing , there is 2 11" clutches , the 69 & earlier are 11" & will not fit the smaller flywheel you have , you would need the larger belhousing & flywheel to make it fit , in 70 mopar started using the same size flywheel for all V8  applications , & there are 2 clutches that fit the same flywheel , the 10.5 " you now have & the 11" [10.95"]   scalloped cltuch , I recommend upgrading to the 10.95 setup
