power steering hose issue? help!
« on: March 31, 2010 - 09:20:59 PM »
Ok getting close to firing up this thing...
Question, on a power steering box is there a fitting for the pressure side that screws in the steering box? :clueless: All I have is a male thread on the box, and a male end on the pump. I ordered a new pressure hose for a 70 Challenger with a 440 and a saginaw pump. The hose came with a male and a female end so it won't fit? I must be missing a fitting or something? I looked on the rock auto catalog/site and it looks like all the hoses are male/female ends? :1zhelp:
anyone? :dunno:

Thanks for the reply Dave!
this "shuttle valve nipple" must be what I'm missing? Anyone have a picture of one and where do I get one?

I am confused by what part you need  :clueless:,if you look at the steering pump maybe there is a removable male fitting left by a previous owner if so discard it and try your new hose,  if its the fitting on the steering box in the ebay pic it might be the part you need,,,,,,,,,, but wait I need to tell you my current P/S unit adventure first  :banghead:............

I have a T/A box and a Saginaw pump and used it for years works good too but the hose was old and dry so bought a new line from NAPA (I think) installed it  after a short run it started to leak at the steering box fitting and actually started a fire  :22yikes: :22yikes: put the fire out no damage done except I thought I was having a heart attack due to my Challenger appearing to go up in smoke (Serious too)..............   Problem is that fitting in the pic is too tall for my  new line and it will not get enough threads to tighten down, I think the actual problem is that the new steering line fitting on the box side is made too short , I have looked every where for a shorter fitting but have found nothing in fact I can't even find a replacement fitting its a hard item to find , wonder where the ebayer found it because I think he is way high, 26 dollars for a flare fitting geeeesh............

the pump has a female fitting in it, so does the steering box. The hose has 1 male end and one female end. I'm learning I need a fitting that I don't have that goes on the steering box.
