Question on 90* oil filter adapter position.....

Does the hole I'm pointing at have to be lined up with the hole on the engine block to get correct oil flow?
Does the position of the adapter matter at all?
I'm trying to get it to work with my Hooker headers.
Is it OK to go to a smaller oil (K&N) filter? I think that's the only way I can use the 90* adapter, the fatter oil filter won't fit.
