How to swap a 4 speed tail shaft housing
« on: March 03, 2010 - 09:41:45 PM »
I need to swap the tailshaft housing on an 833OD.  Is there a simple way to do this, or does most of the tranny need to come apart?

the whole trans needs to be disassembled to swap it , you need to pull the side cover , remove the tailhousing from the main case then you need to drop the counter shaft ,to remove the main shaft , once the main shaft is out you can get to the snap ring & slide the tailhousing off the mainshaft

That is what I thought.  Is there a good book that will walk a moron like me through the process?

factory service manual ... but you need a later manual for the 75 up OD 833 , the OD is a different animal , the larger OD gear on the mainshaft will not go into the case unless the countershaft id dropped down in the case , so you need a dummy pin to load all the brgs into the countershaft & hold them in place while the counter shaft is lowered , then you need to insert the mainshaft & rotate the tailhousing 180* I slide in the countershaft pin once the countershaft is positioned  then rotate the tailhousing 180* back to the normal position & bolt it on

Is this the truck/b/e body trans or the a/f body?

Why are you wanting to swap?

It had previously been gone through, and the earlier B body tail was installed on it.
