passon hemi 4 speed OD, couple questions..
« on: March 13, 2010 - 04:42:38 PM »
Ok, I am sure you all are sick of my never ending tranny questions, but I have more.  So the consensus is that the Passon 4 speed Hemi OD can handle more torque than the TKO 600, is that correct?  Now, if I got the Passon unit, what else would I need to get to complete my switch from a auto to 4 speed.  I am trying to assess the complete cost.  The unit is 2995, then I would need the pedals, flywheel, scattershield, clutch, 4 speed hump...what else?  What do you think the total conversion cost would end up being?  The 4th gear ratio is I think .82, so no real difference than the tko 600rr as far as highway cruising, right?  thoughts, opinions musings?

You would also need a shifter, shift linkage, shifter boot, clutch linkage, clutch fork, pilot bearing, throw out bearing and carpet. If you want the back up lights to work you would need that harness also. You would also need a drivshaft if you currently have a 904.

In return you get a "man's" car.

So, the conversion is fairly pricey no matter which route you go it seems.  but in the end the Passon unit would be stronger than the TKO 600, correct?

Thanks Chryco.
and yes, I did see that tranny, and heard that Passon is coming out with a 5-speed in the near future.  All this work will be started and completed in the spring of 2011.  So no real rush at the moment, just kind of fact gathering so I know whats what come decision time.

Don't be afraid to buy the current offering Jaimie has with the 4 speed OD. I read his take on the McLeod unit on the Moparts forum. I will wait for his 5 speed but at the moment I am tickled that I have his brand new 4 speed. I have a fairly powerful B stroker 451 and was running a standard van OD last year with 3.0, 1.65, 1 & .71 OD with 3.73 Dana. The drop in RPM between shifts were noticeable but with the power the engine just did not care. Now I have 2.65, 1.55, 1 & 0.8 OD so it will be much better even though I spin a little higher in 4th. But the 4th will be like having a normal gearbox with 2.98 gears in the back. And the strength ..... this box will be brutal and reliable. When the time comes, in goes his 5 speed, but I may never need it.
For those that want a cheaper conversion an idea would be to just go with the van or pickup OD A833 and wait until Jaimie comes out with his new unit. If you buy it then it is just a weekend bolt in.
Just my  :2cents:

yeah, I think his 5 speed will be the way to go.  otherwise the 4 speed od unit.  I have heard nothing but good things about his work.
