I have used the late three prong switch on that style lever and it has worked. When the points touch the center metal piece in the switch,it grounds the relay for the starter. When the switch is in the center "dipped" area,it pops the switch plunger out all the way and activates the rev lights. You should be able to have the rev lights on with the switch unscrewed out of the transmission and the connector plugged onto it and the key in the "on" position.. If they do not come on,then with it all plugged in and the key on,push in and out on the switch plunger and see if they blink on and off.
